PR What?

OK seriously… I get such a chuckle out of these people who place any kind of perceived value on page rank and other vanity numbers as if it determines how much traffic you can get to your site. Even worse some people in the blogosphere have started freaking out because they have lost PR or some other nonsense.

Who cares about a number that has no bearing on the value of your site or how much traffic you get? If you want a number that roughly determines how much traffic your site receives go and download the Alexa toolbar.

In business you know that diversifying your income is a smart thing to do, so why haven’t you diversified your traffic sources? The good news is that there are so many ways to get traffic, many of which are low cost or 100% free:

Blog Comments
Article Marketing
Social Bookmarking Sites
Blog Cast
Blog Carnivals
Content Sites
Forums
Trackbacks

When you employ all of these traffic tactics to the max you will create many streams of incoming traffic to your site or blog… so if one dries up or isn’t as effective you still will get traffic from the other sources. In this business I use or have used all of these traffic sources and each provides a chunk of the overall traffic, removing any one source will not take away all the traffic. No one company owns or controls all the traffic on the ‘net!

When you diversify your sources you won’t have to worry about ever being cut off from a single traffic source, ever! How’s that for a safety net.

Why limit yourself to one or two sources that you have zero control over and can pull the plug at any time? That’s just silly. With the list of techniques provided you can start bringing in traffic today with minimal effort.

Stop worrying about numbers that don’t add to or subtract from the bottom line, that’s how you build a business.

I hope this goes without saying, but the most important number associated with your website is the one that follows the $. Or in other words, how much money is it making? And btw, I like ham for Thanksgiving, too.

i learned the hard way that everything is free. getting traffic via forums and blog carnivals works the best for me. Commenting is second. As far as PR, i don’t have one assigned yet but i have to agree with you. The important number is your reach. Do you have a readership base that really reads your blog. I am noticing that johnchow has a lot of subscribers who aren’t actual readers. Just people wanting to suck up to a guy that makes a lot of money.

I would say since you are on the low end of the pr spectrum, this is what works. BUT - when you become famous the pr will get more results on every post, so you better pay attention to your posts. PR has everything to do with how much traffic you get later! I would think all else will get dwarfed by your search engine traffic results.
