Recently in the northern part of California where I live we have had some pretty severe storms blow through complete with high winds and flooding… naturally when this happens along with it comes rather extended power outages from downed trees hitting power lines and the like. It got so bad that even dedicated circuits (T1’s and the like) went down for many many hours.
Some people here where without power for several days.
It pays to be prepared and one of the things I did for this business was geographically seperate myself from my hosting providers and add some level redundancy just in case. I could have hosted it down the street at the local ISP but instead opted to have this blog hosted in Texas while I am many many miles away in another state.
I also seperated my product hosting from my blog hosting using a different company for each. Although currently both reside fairly close to one another geographically… something I am thinking about changing. Before long I will even break up product sites to several hosting companies as well.
I have also seperated out my DNS registrar from my web hosting providers making it very simple to redirect the domain names to another web host if need be.
All important files, products and passwords for this business are backed up to an Xdrive account so if things really get bad or a product site needs to be replaced from scratch it can be done in a minimal amount of time.
Kunaki also works as a handy backup for storing your finished CD or DVD products… you can even upload finished images for safe storage although you will need to order a copy every 90 days or they will delete them.
Natural disasters happen and so do human errors but at least with the current configuration I can lose my blog and my connection to the Internet and still continue to make sales.
