Article Marketing Basics

With the recent release of the Article Marketing tool to beta testers I think now is a good time to revisit how to successfuly do article marketing since a good portion of feedback I get is that people still don’t see benefit of building a list of publications for submitting articles to.

Let’s take for example the recent smackdown of AdWords ads… essentially the one or two page squeeze and sales page has all but been elminated from AdWords. What could Google be telling us by all of these changes? That it wants content rich sites and pages… and further more it wants sites or pages focused on a topic or narrow selection of related keywords so much so that it was willing to give up a major portion of AdWords revenue to make people comply.

A site like ezinearticles is anything but narrow or focused, and yet nearly everyone who does article marketing just loves throwing all these articles on it and other big article repositories just like it. Let’s see what Quantcast has to say about the audience visting ezinearticles.com:

So who exactly is visiting ezinearticles? According to Quantcast other article marketers and people looking for, ahem… “love” or to lose weight. The last two are a bit of a surpise, so I guess if your have something to sell to article marketers or the health and “love” markets keep on posting your articles there. I blacked out one site since it wasn’t exactly family friendly, if your curious go check out Quantcast yourself.

Now if you want to continue using the big article directories… fine, but don’t limit yourself to only using them otherwise you are leaving a huge untapped market. Most people who think they are article marketing are currently operating that way.

Now my approach to article marketing is quite a bit different. I focus on writing articles for readers of ezines, topical sites and publications in my target markets and not on article marketing for search engine rankings.

However I fully concede that an article that comes up with for the right keyword ranking highly in the search engines can bring in good quality traffic that converts… I just find that trying to garner ranking is a long row to hoe and especailly when it can be taken down at any time for any reason and this is especially true when people find a way to game Google or put up sites that it doesn’t like. Just ask all the BANS users about that.

Yes your bio box will contain a link back to your site and the search engines are going to pick up on that and (hopefully) it will help your rankings. But I always look at this as a secondary benefit since your primary purpose for article marketing is to readers who share an interest in the topic of your article.

The purpose of the bio or about the author box is to SELL or offer a FREEBIE and basically give the article reader a very compelling reason to click on the link back to your site. It is almost like, in fact just like a very tiny sales letter all by itself.

Think about it this way… in all but the most obscure markets there are going to be a dozen or so top blogs or other information sites that will have a following of thousands of readers. One article landing on one of these sites has the potential to be read by thousands of eyeballs.

Also consider that fact that all sites are starved for content, portal sites like Yahoo and AOL rotate alot of the same crummy content and all of your newspapers syndicate content from other newspapers… sites want and need content and if you write good content you have a very high chance of getting it picked up by sites in your market.

So get out there and start building a list of your own publishers and start submitting articles to them. Yes it IS work, in fact it is ALOT of work. Nobody ever said article marketing or building a successful business would be easy.

The Annual Political Post

Most of the time I stay out of talking politics… so I will reserve this to an annual or quarterly type of thing (see December of 07 archives for the Tea Party post).

This recently approved bailout package really makes you wonder what in the world our elected officials in Washington are doing and who they represent.

Where is this 650+ Billion dollars going to come from? There are really only two choices… Crank up the fed printing press which is going to result in higher inflation or increase taxes… most likely these taxes will be coming from YOUR pocket and not from businesses despite what either presidential candidiate is telling you.

Do you really think ANY of this money is going to help out “Joe the Plummer” or Joe Anybody escape foreclosure? Check this out:

Now if your opposed to the shananagans being pulled by our elected officials I suggest you check out this website to see if your local congressman voted for the bailout and then contact their office (they all have email or phone numbers you can call) and tell them you will not vote for them in the upcoming election. Troubled times are just ahead…

A Killer Article Marketing Tool

After a long wait the time has finally arrived… If you use article marketing like I do then you have probably gotten fed up with the limitations imposed by the current tools available:

• Relying on plain SMTP to send mail, almost every ISP has shut down this ability.
• Using the same resource box for every article.
• Submitting to a bunch of worthless article directories that get zero traffic.
• Word substitution, spinners and garbage content.

I am looking for a few beta testers of a new article marketing tool who can test it out and provide me specific feedback and testimonials for the product. Stay tuned for more information.

Business Reality Check

First check out this excellent post by Lynn Terry at ClickNewz.

How many of you have the determination to work on a building your online business seven days a week for a solid year? Myself included… I am constantly reminded of a post by SnowBoardJohn: when is it time to turn your life around? Most won’t because its simply much easier to work a 9 to 5 in your own comfort zone regardless of how risky that is.

I will take a guess that most people reading this post aren’t turning tricks on the street to make ends meet, but are you really that much different then those that do? You are probably working harder than ever to pay off a mortage, car payment, credit card debts and living paycheck to paycheck wondering why you can never get ahead.

Kill The Squirrels

Many of you who use Camtasia Studio to produce screen capture videos are probably fully aware of the chirping and garbled sound that started happening when producing flash files for the web starting with release 5 of the software programs.

This was due to an apparent issue with teh flash player and previously you had to back level Adobe flash to correct the issue… but no more!

Techsmith finally fixed the issue with the release 5.0.2 of Camtasia. This is a free fix if your already on version 5, simply download it and run through the installation process… then any new productions to flash that you do will have crystal clear sound.

On the Techsmith web page they also offer a utility to repair existing flash files. No more squirrels!

Moving To The B Quadrant

One of my favorite collections of books is the Rich Dad Poor Dad series by author, entrepreneur and investor Robert Kiyosaki. And while most of the books in the RDPD series are excellent for describing why the poor are poor and have no money and what you can do to start getting onto the road of wealth to become rich, I particularly like the book from the RDPD series called “The Cashflow Quadrant.”

Cashflow Quadrant breaks out the different types of people, aka quadrants, there are in the world of money; employees, self-employed, business owners and investors. The book goes into detail on how people in each quadrant live, work and think when it comes to personal finances.

If you are a slave wage living paycheck to paycheck or worse yet a slave to your own business working 80 hours a week it is definately a good read to help you reflect on where you are in life and where you want to be… which hopefully is financial and personal freedom.

So what quadrant are you in? A lot of my fellow bloggers would probably fancy themselves as rather sophisticated business owners in the B quadrant but in reality most of them are nothing more then self-employed people who own a job in the S quadrant… when you stop working the money stops coming in.

When your ready to move from the S quadrant (self-employed, job owner) and on over to the B (business) quadrant, the quadrant where real weath is created, its time to buckle down and start creating and executing systems to run your business.

Most people automatically throw up the money factor when thinking about hiring help, more specifically that they lack sufficient funds… its a common problem with any budding business. An Internet business is just like any business as most of the day to day tasks fall into the routine minutia that are boring anyway, it’s the old 80/20 principle where you are most likely spending 80% of your time dealing with the minutia.

For example on a recent programming project I could have done it myself taking up alot of my time, which is an S quadrant way of doing things, but instead I decided to use RentACoder to outsource the entire project freeing up my time to handle other stuff. And it was for far less then one would imagine.

The same can be true for your business, and you can definately start out by outsourcing small tasks, even sub-tasks that are part of bigger systems… In the information age and with technology even if its only $50 or $100 a month you can hire an outsourcerer that can net you several hours of labor to help build your business.

And systems are how you start becoming a “B” type business owner and thinker.

Over Delivery Creates Value

Have you ever been up late at night and caught some of those infomercials slanging all kinds of products. Clearly the established companies who have been in the business of selling know what they are up to… unlike the Internet these guys have to outlay quite a bit of cash to be on TV so you can be assured they know how to sell unlike alot individuals who slap up a sales page or squeeze page.

And it’s never just the one main product they are advertising but more like a suite of products, they show pictures of them all fanned out with the extra items making you really feel like your getting a lot of bang for your dollar. When you watch these it becomes quickly apparent that the TV infomercials have mastered overdelivering.

You see this occasionally in the online arena as well… Look at all the big names out there and what they are selling, rarely is it just one product but a whole box of DVDs and CDs complete with extra interviews and thick volumes of transcripts of the entire thing.

And I’m not talking about reams of PLR ebook “bonuses”

What’s up with the ebooks? Everyone seems to love frickin ebooks, I personally have a distaste for them… but beyond my opinion about ebooks the fact remains creating a power point slide show and recording a video while flipping through the slide show is so much FASTER and EASIER then pounding out page after page of written material.

Did you hear that, I said FASTER and EASIER. Yes video delivers on both of those promises.

What If your dead broke and can’t afford PowerPoint? Download the free open office suite and use the presentation program included with it.

If you suck at video then doing audio interviews has got to be the easiest way to produce extra materials, especially if you have good interviewing or conversation skills. You don’t need a studio to record this stuff, a plain old telephone type of interview will do just fine along with free software you can download to your PC to record it all.

Give people what they want and over deliver it… I like the way Marlon says it “offer them something they would crawl over broken glass to get” every time I am working on a product I keep that mantra in mind.

Copywriter Stephen Dean Gone Wild

OK, gone wild may not be the words of choice… But Copywriter Stephen Dean is giving away a free DVD that I believe has a retail value of $100 and following it up by with his upcoming product. Check out the juicy details here:

http://www.stephensblog.com/?p=342

Next up is his WYSIWYG sales page writer which sounds really interesting! I have seen and use several of Stephen’s products including how to add Digital Scarcity to your sales pages, expert information on writing killer copy in Tapping Michel Fortin’s Brain and the very nifty Wordpress plugin LinkOMatic that automatically creates links you define based on keywords and phrases in your blog posts… All top notch stuff.

***UPDATE***

The WYSIWYG Killer has been unleased! I really like this concept as I write all HTML by hand and ditched using any of those other programs that pump out bloated code that is impossible to read of modify by hand (*cough Word*). Stick around as I check out the program and give you a full review or if you head on over to that link I provided above you can get your own FREE copy!
